Sorry for the unannounced intermission! A few EARTHSHATTERING events have taken place since our last information proclamation.

  • Tmesis's own Kevin Wright got married several months ago; he and his wife have just moved into their new home - cheers!
  • We have pushed our writing efforts beyond Chapter 2 of Inter Bella, and are going to pull together the entirety of Act I before releasing it.
  • I'd like to have the Fiction section of the site up by next Saturday (2/14/09). We have some stories we'd like to show you!
Further news to come as we make things happen.

What? We're updating!?

It has been a while, but I have a bit of impressive news. We have formally (in other words, sitting in a Barnes & Noble coffee shop, mochaccino floor stains sticking to our shoes) inducted Tmesis-pal Mike Sova as our new staff serial writer. Celebration ensued with light banter, pats on the back, and processed potato crisps. We'll post more on this development in a later update.

We are now ready to begin looking at our printed magazine format - we'll be doing that in tandem with finishing up our website work.

The world is a peach.

A couple of announcements:

Our stories are ready to be published! Unfortunately, our website is not - not yet, anyway. While our serials are ready to go, we're in the process of creating images to go along with them.

There is the ideal that we don't need images, that the stories should speak to themselves, but we thought we'd add another dimension of depth to reduce tunnel-vision reading.

The setback in all this is that we don't have an artist/illustrator. What we've done so far is looking pretty good, but we can certainly use some help. If you're an illustrator and you're interested contributing to our project, please give us a ring: ray(dot)wong(at)tmesismag(dot)com

In other news, Kevin Wright is now grinding the gears over at Pearson Books. It's the company that has probably published half the school text books you've ever owned. Also, Dan Dominguez is engaged to be married (possibly twice, I hear)! AND, he recently made a brief sojourn to Comic-Con, which I hope he'll blog about soon.

I might get a brick to the head for promoting this hear, but why not.

Posted up a fun story I did that packed Hunter Thompson and Jack Kerouac on the road to hell. Or Barstow.

How's THAT for some news!?!

Let's end any pretense here. We want you to read our stories. Better put, we need you to read our stories. But here's the thing - all of us here at tmesismag.com are pretty much convinced that very soon you're going to love to read our stories. I'll tell you why: you're tired of watching horrible reality shows produce even more horrible spin-offs. You want to shut down that television and navigate away from the tabloid trainwrecks that people politely call news and immerse yourself in a world so vivid that you're relatively sure you've been there before.

So what part of this post is news you say? This part: In a matter of weeks we're going to launch an interactive reading experience that will be quite unlike anything you've probably ever seen. It will come to you in crumbs and morsels, gnawing at your stomach, and neither of us will stop until every inch of your hunger for our words is satiated.

So let's get one thing straight - you promise to read, and we'll promise to reward; together we'll make that pact and see just where this adventure takes us both.

Things are tugging along here with the magazine. Kevin seems to have plowed into some artistic inspiration and is working on some images for Face in the Crowd, his individual fiction serial, as we speak. The previews he showed me are looking great. Meanwhile, Dan's recent blog posts have been putting my head in a spin... That flavor I'm getting but can't place my finger on, that's making me want more despite my urge to run away screaming? I figure that to be the weirdness. Possibly the lolcats, I'm not sure.

But I digress from the true intent behind this post, and that's to shamelessly promote a new 'weekend serial' that I've just started. It's called John de Clare, and it's about a sanitation worker who digs his nose a little too deeply into the garbage pile and gets himself into some hairy situations. You can read more about it here. Keep in mind that this story contains some strong language. Johnny Boy's a pottymouth.

Enjoy! (Or loathe, if you prefer.)

We've just put links to our personal staff blogs into the sidebar; check them out. There, you can find more information about us and our daily rants, raw and uncut, about everyday what-have-yous. You might discover more than you'd care to know...

I'll also post the links here for your convenience:

On a side note, we came to the conclusion that calling our individual serials 'solo stories' is a little silly. In light of that, we changed the soon-to-be link up top to plain ol' 'Fiction'. Can't beat the classics.

Just a quick update.

Dr. James A. Connor, our former professor, now colleague and friend, has been a great influence on us. He's helped us through the thick and thin of writing and learning, and even guided Kevin and me across Prague during our travel-learn.

Well, Kevin spoke to him recently and he expressed a strong interest in contributing his own literary part to our magazine. I've got to be honest - I didn't think such well-published authors would take such an interest in what we've been doing this early in the game, but there you have it!

As always with things concerning Dr. Connor's participation, we'd be honored to have his writing grace our pages.

We're proud to announce that Tmesis Magazine will be distributed for free at The Raconteur, a charming little book shop on Main Street, Metuchen, New Jersey.

I can think of no better place to have our publication displayed and enjoyed. In an article from The New York Times, which features the store and its proprietor, Alex Dawson, it's described as a "literary center of gravity":

Witness [Mr. Dawson's] main gig, his attempt to start an independent literary bookstore, writers' salon and literary center of gravity in Metuchen, N.J. And, quite amazingly, a year and a half into the game, his bookstore, the Raconteur, has become slightly famous in literary circles in Brooklyn and Manhattan as well as Edison and New Brunswick, even if the jury is still out on whether anyone can make much of a living this way in the age of Amazon, Borders and Barnes & Noble. [full article]
The store opened under Alex's name not long ago, in November 2004, and has, by the looks of it, been doing fairly well. But this is not surprising, given his past accomplishments. (It's all outlined in the article.) I spoke briefly with Mr. Dawson earlier today, and he seemed happy to allow us to place our magazine. It goes to show his willingness to help out the up-starter and to rejuvenate the hopeful ideals of the independent producer.

While I was there, I also asked him if I could take a few pictures of his store.

Thought I was exaggerating about all the cool stuff, huh? If you're able, head on down and check the place out for yourself. Located a block away from the Metuchen train station and right off of Route 27 (exit 131 on the Parkway), it's not too hard to get to.
