The Sony Reader - you've all heard of it, but have you ever considered buying it? When it comes to reading, there's a sort of romanticism that's associated with holding a book in my hands and (at the risk of being labeled 'one of those people') being able to take it out of my satchel as an identifier of what I'm into, in a literary sense. But I can't ignore the practicalities of the Sony Reader and the newer Amazon Kindle.

A recent headline at Publisher's Weekly announced that Random House will be handing out Sony Readers to their sales reps. One of the perks of working for one of the big publishers. Hachette and St. Martin's Press also have plans for adopting the gadget in order to streamline their operations.

According to RH, the company has bought "several hundred" readers for its sales management, reps, and home office sales support staff. The sales department will use the device to read manuscripts and other relevant material in digital form. The company's goal is to, as quickly as possible, "eliminate altogether manuscript dispersal to our sales group by migrating this reading experience of many thousands of paper pages to the electronic reader," said spokesperson Stuart Applebaum. [full article]
"Several hundred"... that's got to be an easy hundred grand. Nevertheless, brilliant move, says I. Each of us here at TmesisMag has at some point had to work with dozens of bulky manuscripts at once, and it's a huge pain to be lugging around 30lbs of paper back and forth from the office. Reading multiple manuscripts from a reader also lessens the tedium of having to stare at pieces of recycled mulch all day. I'd venture as far as to say that it'd be like playing a video game. Possibly the dreariest video game in the world in which the sole requisite for victory is being able to not fall asleep before finishing, but it's certainly a step up.

But for purposes of enjoyment, I don't think I'd ever pick an electronic reader over a nice solid book. There's just something a little too sterile about viewing stories from the thin metallic slab that is the mechanician's delight. The next time I feel the need to satiate my techie desires, I'll just buy a new cell phone, thanks very much.

Welcome to Tmesismag.com v1.1. We're still a long way from completing the entire website, but I feel that we've gotten a lot done.

Construction is officially finished here on the News page unless something inexplicably blows up on me. Not to jinx it or anything, but something will inexplicably blow up on me. And by god, with my luck, it will be spectacular. I had to move all the posts over from the previous blog, so even though all the current posts say that I authored them, it may not be the case for each one.

A notice for RSS subscribers: you'll have to re-subscribe using the new link at the top of the sidebar. Or you could just click here.

I might get a brick to the head for promoting this hear, but why not.

Posted up a fun story I did that packed Hunter Thompson and Jack Kerouac on the road to hell. Or Barstow.

How's THAT for some news!?!

As I'm attempting to restyle our website, you may notice things looking a bit odd (and decimated) around here in the next few days. Trust me, it'll be for the greater good. In addition to making this news page a little more solid, I'll be creating a template we can use for the other pages of the site. And I'll begin work on the super secret WHITE theme as a variation of the usual gray-on-black to garnish our story pages, hopefully making things easier on the eyes.

No other news to report as yet; only that we've all completed our story chapters for Issue #1. I will roar you as gently as any sucking dove and all that.

Now, pardon me - off to smash up some HTML and style sheets.

Let's end any pretense here. We want you to read our stories. Better put, we need you to read our stories. But here's the thing - all of us here at tmesismag.com are pretty much convinced that very soon you're going to love to read our stories. I'll tell you why: you're tired of watching horrible reality shows produce even more horrible spin-offs. You want to shut down that television and navigate away from the tabloid trainwrecks that people politely call news and immerse yourself in a world so vivid that you're relatively sure you've been there before.

So what part of this post is news you say? This part: In a matter of weeks we're going to launch an interactive reading experience that will be quite unlike anything you've probably ever seen. It will come to you in crumbs and morsels, gnawing at your stomach, and neither of us will stop until every inch of your hunger for our words is satiated.

So let's get one thing straight - you promise to read, and we'll promise to reward; together we'll make that pact and see just where this adventure takes us both.

That is to say, I'm sure we would be on schedule if we had one. Currently, I'm working on the final couple of paragraphs of my Inter Bella story, which means we'll have a release soon.

There's a particular scene in the story that I've been wrestling with, one that's supposed to come across as borderline-epic. How are you supposed to write something like that? It's like trying to sketch the center of the sun. Well, I did my best.

With any luck, the edits won't be extensive. I'll be looking forward to seeing Dan's comments, since his editorial eye has been spot on for my last draft. Dan, by the way, is the voice behind Perry P - he decided to drop the moniker. Smart move... I think I prefer the actual Dan over Pseudo-Dan.

Anyway, both Dan and Kevin area already finished (more or less) with their Inter Bella story parts, so after I finish writing mine, it's left to my putting up the needed webpages for our stories.

Sounds like fun! (But no. No, it's not.)

Things are tugging along here with the magazine. Kevin seems to have plowed into some artistic inspiration and is working on some images for Face in the Crowd, his individual fiction serial, as we speak. The previews he showed me are looking great. Meanwhile, Dan's recent blog posts have been putting my head in a spin... That flavor I'm getting but can't place my finger on, that's making me want more despite my urge to run away screaming? I figure that to be the weirdness. Possibly the lolcats, I'm not sure.

But I digress from the true intent behind this post, and that's to shamelessly promote a new 'weekend serial' that I've just started. It's called John de Clare, and it's about a sanitation worker who digs his nose a little too deeply into the garbage pile and gets himself into some hairy situations. You can read more about it here. Keep in mind that this story contains some strong language. Johnny Boy's a pottymouth.

Enjoy! (Or loathe, if you prefer.)

I've decided to utilize flickr for our news photos so that we can save a little space and bandwidth on our server. With all the networking and functionality it has, it was a no-brainer.

While I was there, I also started up a group for Tmesis Magazine where you can add photos to its photo pool if you've got a flickr account yourself, so feel free to add in all those crazy pictures you never wanted Mom to see. We might just use them in our posts.
